How an IFTTTer automates awareness, comfort, and control

Managing a smart home comes with its perks, but also its challenges. As you increase the number of connected devices in your home the complexity of staying on top of them increases as well. From lighting and power usage to unpredictable weather and device malfunctions, there’s a lot to manage. For many IFTTTers, automation is the key to staying informed, comfortable, and in control without the constant need to check apps and dashboards.

IFTTT connects to over 1000 apps. From productivity tools and calendars to social media and smart devices, IFTTT makes it easy to build Applets. Applets are custom automations that run on their own based on the trigger settings. For this user, IFTTT is more than a convenience, it’s the foundation of a streamlined workflow that powers their connected home, turning scattered devices into a coordinated system that alerts them before problems arise, and simplifies daily routines.

The problem

Smart devices can do a lot, but when they don’t work together, keeping up with them becomes a chore. Checking each app for updates, alerts, or energy stats takes time, and by the time something important pops up, like a device going offline or a storm on the way, it’s often too late to act. This IFTTTer wanted a setup that didn’t just react to what’s happening, but gave them a heads-up before it did. This user was looking to create workflows that made all their smart devices feel like one connected, helpful system.

The solution

Using IFTTT, they created a string of Applets that help streamline their day and make their environment more responsive.

The Applets below are helpful and easy to connect. You can select any of the Applet cards on this page to connect it your self!

Geofencing for a smart welcome

When they arrive home, their Philips Hue lights automatically turn on. It adds comfort, boosts safety, and makes returning home feel seamless.

Proactive weather alerts

Instead of finding out about rain after it's already started, they get an early warning based on local forecasts. If severe weather is expected, they’ll receive a heads-up in the morning, giving them time to plan, dress accordingly, or adjust their schedule.

Every morning at 7 AM, they receive a weather forecast as a notification, keeping them one step ahead of the day. This Applet can be modified to give you the weather for the next day, in case you need a little extra time.

Keeping tabs on smart devices

If a connected device goes offline or reports an issue, this IFTTT user can be immediately notified. They use Aquanta with IFTTT to help manage their water heater automatically. Whenever their Android device connects to or disconnects from WiFi, they also get a notification.

Whenever Aquanta detects a leak, they automatically receive an SMS notification on their phone.

Each time their Android device connects to or disconnects from any WiFi network, they receive a notification instantly to manage thier WiFi settings or see if there was an issue with their network.

Automating by time and date

Their home runs on a schedule. Lights dim after sunset, notifications go silent during sleep hours, and the morning routine starts with gentle changes to lighting or temperature. It’s automation that follows their daily rhythm.

At a set time every day, their Android device automatically mutes to preserve their evening peace and allow them to unwind for the day.

Their Philips Hue lights simulate sunrise by gradually changing colors. This Applet triggers within 15 minutes of sunrise at their location, easing them into the day.

Monitoring power usage

With energy prices on the rise, tracking consumption matters. IFTTT sends regular summaries or alerts when power usage crosses a certain threshold, helping them identify patterns and reduce unnecessary use.

With their WeMo Smart Plug, they can turn lights and devices on or off from anywhere. Whenever the WeMo Switch is turned on, an event is automatically added to their Google Calendar.
